This 30 day drawing challenge for beginners gives you one clear task and one thing to check every day, 15 minutes a day: lines and shapes in week 1, proportion and shading in week 2, real objects and photos in week 3, repetition and your own choice in week 4. You need a pencil, an eraser and any paper, and you finish with 30 dated pages you can compare.

The five rules

The tasks, week by week

Week 1: lines, shapes and seeing
  1. Day 1: ten straight lines and ten smooth curves between dots, moving your whole arm. Check: one confident stroke each?
  2. Day 2: ten ellipses, then one inside a square. Check: round ends, not pointed?
  3. Day 3: a box, cylinder, sphere and cone from above and at eye level. Check: can you see the top?
  4. Day 4: a mug, lightly, or the pencil mug lesson and then once alone. Check: width against height right?
  5. Day 5: blind contour of a leaf, eyes never on the paper. Check: did your eyes stay on the leaf?
  6. Day 6: negative space around a chair back. Check: do the gaps look real?
  7. Day 7, review: lay out days 1 to 6 and redraw your mug in 5 minutes.
Week 2: proportion and light
  1. Day 8: a book and a mug, measured with your pencil. Check: size relation right?
  2. Day 9: a five-step value scale, then a rectangle in three values. Check: five steps distinct?
  3. Day 10: an egg under one lamp with a cast shadow. Check: one lightest and one darkest area?
  4. Day 11: an apple, or the shaded apple lesson and then alone. Check: darker patch where it touches the table?
  5. Day 12: a tin can, shaded with curved strokes. Check: strokes follow the curve?
  6. Day 13: the same mug twice, lit from left, then right. Check: shadow moved?
  7. Day 14, review: redraw the egg in 5 minutes.
Week 3: real objects and photos
  1. Day 15: a pear from two ovals, then shade. Check: soft light to shadow?
  2. Day 16: a sneaker in three simple shapes. Check: proportions before laces?
  3. Day 17: a leaf with veins. Check: veins branch from the center?
  4. Day 18: your own photo of a pet or plant, big shapes only. Check: close to the photo?
  5. Day 19: the same photo in three tones. Check: clear light and shadow shapes?
  6. Day 20: the cartoon bird lesson, then once without the stages. Check: two circles, then one outline?
  7. Day 21, review: put day 1 and day 4 beside today's versions.
Week 4: repetition, your choice and a finish
  1. Day 22: the same mug three times, 5 minutes each. Check: what improved?
  2. Day 23: five 3-minute sketches of household objects. Check: big shapes first?
  3. Day 24: a cup in window light with its cast shadow. Check: darkest where it touches?
  4. Day 25: a crumpled sheet of paper. Check: soft and sharp edges?
  5. Day 26: an invented mug. Check: opening still an ellipse? The no-reference guide shows how.
  6. Day 27: three overlapping objects, outline only. Check: what sits in front?
  7. Day 28, review: pick your three favorites and write what they share.
  8. Day 29: redraw day 27 with shading. Check: one light, one shadow side?
  9. Day 30: anything you love. Sign, date, and place it beside day 1.

Missed a day?

Do not double up and do not restart. Draw the next day on the plan and mark the skipped one with a dash. A habit study from UCL found that one missed day did little harm, while many added up. Missed two or three? Repeat last week's review day, then carry on. Treat 30 days as the launch: a second month makes it stick.

Not sure where to begin? The guide to starting to draw as an adult explains the three skills behind these tasks, and this article answers the "am I too late?" worry.

Frequently asked questions

Is 30 days enough to learn to draw?

It is enough to start a habit and to see a difference between day 1 and day 30, not to master drawing.

How long should each day take?

15 minutes, timed. Stopping on time is part of the method.

What if I dislike my drawings?

Keep them anyway. A bad page on day 5 is the baseline that makes day 30 visible.

Your next drawing starts with a photo.
